Lately I have been leaning into some jazz on the guitar, so I am learning some cover tunes to get more acquainted with the complex chords involved. This tune has been a favourite of mine since I was first introduced to Ray Charles' singing. Written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell, I associate this song with sultry evenings in the warm Summer time...hope you're having a great one!

Grey County Winter
Happy New Year everyone!

I have been meaning to do a cover of this song, The Dutchman, ever since I first heard it sung by Steve Goodman. I noticed on Steve's album that the song was written by Michael Smith who, like Steve, was from Chicago so I contacted Michael and invited him to the 1978 Summerfolk Festival which I was booking at the time. He came and he moved the audience deeply with his rich writing. As I head into playing the 50th anniversary of the festival I finally got around to recording this beautiful song. I hope you enjoy it!

Revisiting MOON RIVER
When I was young a copy of the sheet music of Moon River

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND - written by Bob Dylan

After so much new of war and conflict I started to feel the music of sixties when the peace movement against the Viet Nam war had begun. I was 15 at the time this song came out, and the peace movement was not popular in the beginning. It took the strong voices of Martin Luther King and others, supported by music of the day, and we now realize that the movement greatly affected the end of the Viet Nam conflict and had become a genuine political force. This is Bob Dylan's "Blowin In The Wind," an anthem in its day.

JEAN'S HARMONICA (original)

My partner Carol's mom, Jean Edwards, turns 99 years old April 27/23. Jean had a nursing career all her life and raised 3 children with her husband Wally.

Music was woven into their life
together as both were proficient readers of music and played by ear. Jean and Wally put bands
together and regularly played in retirement communities and at other public events. Since Carol and I have been together we regularly get together with Jean and Carol's sister Diane to play music. Jean has an impressive array of instruments, her favourite harmonicas being the Low C and Low F, but just choose any key, and she's right there. Her repertoire is vast and wide and ranges from all the popular songs of the day to songs like Alistair MacGillivray''s Song For The Mira. The joy of those get-togethers inspired this song and Jean was game to record, though she had never recorded formally before.
At 99 Jean looks after the sitting room at her residence tending the plants and keeping the room in shape for people to go to and meditate, or even listen to some music. Jean had Carol and me print up copies of an old harmonica teaching book so that she can teach anyone else interested in playing.
Happy Birthday Jean! With great admiration, respect and love.
